Flamengo rejects Aston Villa offer for Emerson Royal

Emerson Royal stays at Flamengo, which turned down Aston Villa's €9 million (about R$ 53 million) bid. The left‑back, contracted until December 2028, said his mind is with the Red‑Black club and that he still doesn't know the future, despite market interest.

Why didn't the club negotiate?

Flamengo's board expected a higher fee and, faced with what they deemed a low offer, chose to keep the player. Royal is João Varela's main backup and has been crucial in the two inter‑season matches against River Plate and Lausanne, both wins. The hierarchy stresses they will only accept proposals that significantly exceed the €9 million.

What has Royal been doing off the pitch?

During the break, Royal boosted his physical preparation, training in boxing and working away from the training centre. He said he feels good physically and that the work done during the holidays helped him arrive in top shape for the comeback. "It's very important for confidence. I felt good," the player said after the 2‑0 win over Lausanne of Switzerland.

How does this affect Flamengo's campaign?

The Red‑Black side leads the Brasileirão Série A, 1st place with 79 points (23 W‑10 D‑5 L) and has scored 78 goals while conceding 27, sitting three points ahead of Palmeiras. The last result was a 3‑0 loss to RB Bragantino on 3 April 2026. The team has suffered two consecutive defeats (LLWDW) and faces São Paulo at home on 26 July 2026, with the opponent sitting 8th. Currently sidelined are Jorginho, Lucas Paquetá and Jorge Carrascal, increasing the need to retain depth in defence.
