Flamengo wrapped up their pre-season in Europe with a positive evaluation from Leonardo Jardim. With minutes handed to youngsters and reserves, the manager tested the club’s base that will guide them in the second half of 2026 — and a few names stood out. The team sits 2nd in the Brasileirão with 34 points from 17 games, seven behind Palmeiras, and has scored 31 goals while conceding 16 so far. Their next match is against Botafogo at the Maracanã on August 30, the 18th round of the Série A.
Who seized their pre-season chance?
Wallace Yan was the standout name of the trip. He scored against Lausanne-Sport and Benfica, staking a claim to the number 11 shirt as Pedro’s immediate backup. Though he missed some clear chances, the youngster showed composure and pleased Jardim. Samuel Lino, meanwhile, was the main story of Jardim’s stint at Flamengo: he scored, provided an assist, and paved the way for the win over Benfica. Both are now in line for more first-team football.
At left-back, Johnny took advantage of Ayrton Lucas’s absence and impressed. The teenager could be crucial in a sector currently in crisis. João Victor, a defender ex-Internacional, also shone alongside Vitão. Lorran, though less impactful, left questions about his future at the club.
Who kept their status in the squad?
Emerson Royal remains the only real option at right-back and delivered. Erick Pulgar, back from injury, is set to take Evertton Araújo’s place and form a midfield duo with Jorginho. Both regained match sharpness during the two weeks in the Algarve and will be key going forward.
Up front, Pedro, Bruno Henrique, and Everton Cebolinha retain their starting roles. Number 9 Pedro didn’t stand out much but won’t lose his berth. Bruno Henrique, wearing number 27, showed excellent fitness and consistent involvement. Everton Cebolinha remains one of the team’s top options off the bench.
Who underperformed in pre-season?
Luiz Araújo was among the biggest disappointments. Deployed as an attacking midfielder and winger, he failed to deliver. Saúl also struggled to show his best despite minutes aimed at regaining fitness. Evertton Araújo wasn’t bad but lost his spot to Pulgar. Players like Andrew, Dyogo Alves, Daniel Silva, Rayan Lucas, Guilherme Gomes, and Alan Santos saw little game time and didn’t crack the team’s standout list. Joshua, however, featured more and impressed.
Flamengo return to Brazil with a more settled squad and coaches with more options for the season ahead. Their Brasileirão 2026/27 curtain-raiser is scheduled for August 30 against Botafogo at the Maracanã.
